Can a virtual reality headset rewire how we feel back pain?
NCT ID NCT07742111
First seen Aug 03, 2026 · Last updated Aug 04, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study explores whether combining virtual reality with pain science education can help people with chronic low back pain. Adults with moderate pain (at least 4 on a 0-10 scale) will use a Meta Quest 3S headset and learn about pain mechanisms over three weeks, with several sessions per week. The goal is to see if this approach can reduce pain intensity and change how pain is processed. It's a small, early test, so the results will be preliminary.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Virtual reality (Meta Quest 3S) combined with pain neuroscience education
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a drug-free way to help people manage chronic low back pain and reduce its impact on daily life.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small early study (12 people), so results may not apply broadly. The effects of virtual reality on pain are not yet proven, and some people may not find it helpful or comfortable.
