NCT ID NCT07468305
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a personalized virtual reality program that uses sights, sounds, smells, and tastes can reduce apathy in older adults with cognitive impairment living in nursing homes. Ten participants will attend weekly sessions for six weeks, reliving meaningful memories in an immersive environment. The main goal is to see if this approach is feasible and well-tolerated, with early signs of improved motivation and engagement.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
multisensory virtual reality reminiscence therapy
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a drug-free way to reduce apathy and improve engagement in older adults with dementia living in care homes.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study with only 10 participants, so results may not apply broadly. It is also early-stage and focuses on feasibility, not proven effectiveness.
