Pedaling toward happiness: virtual cycling trial aims to boost dementia Patients' Well-Being
NCT ID NCT06466460
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether virtual cycling — pedaling a stationary bike while watching an interactive video — can improve quality of life for older adults with cognitive impairment living in nursing homes. Researchers will compare a group that does virtual cycling with a control group, measuring mood, behavior, and daily function. The goal is to find a motivating activity that combines physical, cognitive, and social stimulation.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, enjoyable way to boost quality of life and physical activity for people with dementia in nursing homes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 60 participants. Previous research is limited, and the benefits seen in a pilot may not hold up in a larger trial.
