App-Based exercise may be as good as In-Person therapy before ACL surgery

NCT ID NCT07322497

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a 4-week exercise program delivered through a smartphone app works as well as supervised sessions with a physical therapist before anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) knee surgery. Sixty-six adults aged 18 to 45 with an ACL tear will be split into three groups: app-based exercises, therapist-supervised exercises, or no specific exercise plan. Researchers will measure knee strength, range of motion, and patient-reported function before and after surgery to see which approach leads to better recovery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
exercise program (via smartphone app or supervised by a physiotherapist)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that a simple phone app is as effective as in-person physical therapy for preparing patients for ACL surgery, making pre-surgery exercise more accessible.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 66 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The app may not match the benefits of personalized supervision, and some patients might not follow the program correctly.
