ACL surgery showdown: which graft causes less pain for athletes?

NCT ID NCT07475351

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two common ACL reconstruction techniques in 110 competitive athletes: the standard bone-patellar tendon-bone graft and a version that leaves out the bottom bone plug. The goal is to see which causes less pain at the harvest site and better restores knee function over two years. Participants will be randomly assigned to one surgery and followed for 24 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

surgical procedure (bone-patellar tendon-bone graft vs patellar tendon graft without bone plug)

What this could lead to

If one technique proves less painful and equally effective, it could become the preferred option for athletes needing ACL repair.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, single-center trial. Results may not apply to all athletes, and both techniques carry standard surgical risks like infection or graft failure.
