Can a simple ultrasound score prevent fluid overload in the ICU?
NCT ID NCT07438015
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will use a bedside ultrasound technique called VExUS to measure vein congestion in 525 intensive care patients. The goal is to see how common congestion is and whether the scan is feasible, even in patients lying on their stomachs. The results may help doctors give fluids more safely in the future.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Venous ultrasound (VExUS score)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could give doctors a reliable tool to measure venous congestion at the bedside, helping them avoid giving too much fluid to ICU patients and potentially improving survival and kidney outcomes.
What could go wrong
This is an early observational study, not a treatment trial. It only describes the VExUS score distribution and feasibility; it does not test whether using the score actually improves patient outcomes.
