New ventilator coaching aims to shield lungs during recovery

NCT ID NCT07294768

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested a new way of using mechanical ventilators, called VentCoach, to better protect the lungs of ICU patients with breathing failure. 18 adults on ventilators were randomly assigned to either the VentCoach protocol or standard care. The main goal was to see if doctors could follow the new protocol correctly, not to measure patient recovery. This is an early feasibility study.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

VentCoach protocol (mechanical ventilation adjustment method)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a better way to set ventilators that reduces lung injury in critically ill patients.

What could go wrong

This is a very small feasibility study (18 people) testing only whether the protocol can be followed, not whether it improves outcomes. Results may not apply to all ICU patients.
