New scan technique aims to solve mystery of failing heart bypass grafts

NCT ID NCT06800430

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study uses advanced total-body PET scans to look inside vein grafts after coronary artery bypass surgery. Researchers want to understand why some grafts fail, leading to heart attacks or strokes. They will scan 70 patients—some soon after surgery and others years later—to track changes in the grafts and the rest of the body. The goal is to find clues that could help prevent graft failure in the future.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

radioactive tracers ([18F]-GP1, [68Ga]-DOTATATE, [68Ga]-FAPI) for PET imaging

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could reveal why vein grafts fail after bypass surgery, pointing toward new ways to prevent graft failure and improve patient outcomes.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study with only 70 participants, so findings may not apply to all patients. It aims to understand the problem, not test a treatment.
