New surgical technique aims to prevent stomach issues after spleen removal
NCT ID NCT07462091
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a new surgical method that uses the vagus nerve to guide spleen removal and vein disconnection in people with cirrhosis and portal hypertension. The goal is to see if this nerve-guided approach reduces common post-surgery problems like diarrhea and delayed stomach emptying. Fifteen participants will be followed for three months to track digestive complications and quality of life.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Vagus nerve-guided laparoscopic splenectomy and azygoportal disconnection (surgical procedure)
What this could lead to
If successful, this surgical technique could reduce post-operative digestive problems like diarrhea and delayed stomach emptying, improving quality of life for cirrhosis patients.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 15 participants, so results may not apply widely. Surgery carries risks like infection or bleeding, and the nerve-guided approach may not always prevent complications.
