First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jul 22, 2026 · Updated 4 times

Summary

This study looks at whether adding a six-session group recovery program and a 90-day home telehealth program can help veterans with substance use disorders drink less and use fewer drugs. About 195 veterans from a VA psychiatric unit will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: the combined program, the telehealth program alone, or usual care. Researchers will track alcohol and drug use, treatment attendance, and community activities for three months after discharge.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Combined Recovery Program (behavioral therapy) and Stable & Able home telehealth program
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a practical, scalable way to help veterans reduce substance use and stay sober after leaving the hospital.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage study (195 participants) comparing two behavioral programs to usual care. Results may not apply to all veterans, and the benefits may be modest or short-lived.
