Parents' phone videos may spot sleep apnea in kids with down syndrome
NCT ID NCT04022460
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study explores whether parents can use their smartphones to record short videos of their child sleeping to screen for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Children with Down syndrome are at higher risk for OSA, but standard sleep studies can be hard to access. Parents will rate the videos, and their assessments will be compared to results from a formal sleep study. If accurate, this approach could help prioritize children for earlier diagnosis and treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
smartphone video clip assessment
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a simple, at-home screening method to identify children with Down syndrome who need a sleep study sooner.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage diagnostic study, not a treatment trial. The video screening may not be accurate enough to replace standard sleep studies, and results may not apply to all children.
