Ultrasound may replace X-Ray for back pain injections, new trial hopes

NCT ID NCT07627308

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial tests if using ultrasound to guide a nerve root injection works as well as the standard X-ray method for treating lower back and leg pain from irritated nerves. Sixty-four adults aged 18 to 75 will receive one injection of steroid and numbing medicine, then be followed for 3 months. The goal is to see if ultrasound can provide similar pain relief without exposing patients to radiation.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
steroid and numbing medicine injection
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that ultrasound guidance is a safe and effective alternative to X-ray for these injections, avoiding radiation exposure for patients.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 64 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The study compares two procedures, not a new treatment, so it won't lead to a cure.
