Sound waves aim to quiet shaky hands – at least for a moment

NCT ID NCT06610877

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) can temporarily reduce essential tremor by targeting specific brain areas. Sixty people scheduled for a standard ultrasound procedure will receive up to 25 short ultrasound pulses while researchers measure tremor changes. The goal is to find the best settings for tremor reduction and understand brain circuits involved.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a non-invasive, temporary way to reduce essential tremor and help map brain circuits for future treatments.

What could go wrong

This is an early, small study (60 people) testing only temporary effects. It may not lead to a lasting treatment, and not everyone may respond.
