First seen Jan 08, 2026 · Last updated May 11, 2026 · Updated 20 times
Summary
This study tested a new way of using breathing machines in 220 adults with severe COVID-19 lung injury. The goal was to see if using very small breaths (ultraprotective ventilation) could reduce lung damage and improve survival compared to standard care. Participants were randomly assigned to either the gentler method or usual care, and researchers tracked deaths and days free from the breathing machine.
