Can your smartwatch predict a heart attack? new study aims to find out

NCT ID NCT04703166

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether a Samsung smartwatch and heart MRI scans can detect early signs of heart muscle damage (atrial myopathy) in 360 people with atrial fibrillation or at high risk for heart disease. Participants wear the watch for up to 9 months while researchers track heart rate, oxygen levels, and activity. The goal is to see if these measurements can predict future heart failure or stroke, not to treat or cure any condition.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors predict who will develop serious heart problems like heart failure or stroke, allowing earlier intervention.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The wearable device may not be accurate enough, and results may not apply to everyone.
