Could a simple ankle zap ease overactive bladder?

NCT ID NCT05977634

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a device that sends mild electrical pulses to a nerve in the ankle (transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation) can reduce overactive bladder symptoms and improve quality of life in women. Twenty-six women with idiopathic overactive bladder will receive the stimulation twice a week for six weeks, plus bladder training. Researchers will measure changes in urination frequency and symptom severity using questionnaires and bladder diaries.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (a device that sends mild electrical pulses to a nerve in the ankle)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a non-drug, non-surgical option to help women with overactive bladder control their symptoms and improve daily life.
What could go wrong
This is a very small study (26 people) with no placebo group, so results may not be reliable or apply to everyone. The treatment requires multiple clinic visits and may not work for all.
