Mouth ultrasound may spot hidden throat abscesses better than standard exam

NCT ID NCT07577232

First seen May 12, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two ways to diagnose a peritonsillar abscess (a pus pocket near the tonsils): the usual clinical exam (looking and feeling) versus adding a small ultrasound probe inside the mouth. About 368 adults with suspected abscess will take part. The goal is to see if ultrasound reduces unnecessary needle sticks and missed abscesses.
