Zapping the brain to decode social fear
NCT ID NCT06274112
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study uses transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to explore how the brain controls social motivation in adults who avoid social situations due to depression or social anxiety. Forty participants will undergo MRI scans, computer tasks, and personalized TMS over four visits. The goal is to understand brain circuits involved in social avoidance, not to treat it directly.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a personalized brain stimulation treatment for social avoidance in depression and social anxiety.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study focused on understanding brain circuits, not testing a treatment. It may not lead to a therapy, and results may not apply to everyone.
