Can an AI coach help therapists treat depression and anxiety online?
NCT ID NCT05321628
First seen Aug 05, 2026 · Last updated Aug 06, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether an AI-based decision support tool can help therapists deliver internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) for depression, panic disorder, and social anxiety. About 400 adults with these conditions will receive 12 weeks of iCBT, with therapists using either a traditional manual or the AI tool that flags patients at risk of not improving and suggests actions. The goal is to see if the AI tool improves symptom reduction and treatment success compared to standard care.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) with an AI-based clinical decision support tool (DST)
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this AI tool could help therapists personalize internet-based therapy, potentially improving outcomes for people with depression, panic disorder, or social anxiety.
- What could go wrong
- The tool is being tested in a specific Swedish-speaking population, and its benefits may not generalize. Also, the study is not a late-phase trial, so real-world impact remains uncertain.
