Liver shunt study targets muscle wasting in cirrhosis

NCT ID NCT06794853

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at why a procedure called TIPS (which helps blood flow in the liver) might also improve muscle loss (sarcopenia) in people with advanced liver disease. Researchers will measure a protein called FGF21 in the blood and track changes in muscle mass and strength over one year. The goal is to understand the mechanism, not to test a new treatment. About 132 adults with cirrhosis who need TIPS will take part.
