TB prevention for kids: immediate treatment may stop infection before it starts

NCT ID NCT07086820

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether giving tuberculosis (TB) prevention drugs immediately to children and teens who live with someone with active TB can stop them from getting infected. About 647 participants aged 5 to 17 will be randomly assigned to receive either immediate treatment or standard care (treatment only if they test positive). The goal is to see if early treatment reduces new infections measured by a blood test after 12 weeks.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

isoniazid and rifapentine (weekly for 12 weeks)

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could prevent many new TB infections in children and adolescents exposed at home, reducing the spread of TB.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small trial (647 participants) in one country, so results may not apply everywhere. The window prophylaxis may not reduce infections more than standard care, and side effects from the drugs are possible.
