Less invasive heart valve replacement put to the test against Open-Heart surgery

NCT ID NCT07413965

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two standard procedures—minimally invasive TAVR and open-heart surgery (SAVR)—for replacing a diseased aortic valve in people with a bicuspid aortic valve. About 1,200 participants aged 50 and older with severe aortic stenosis will be randomly assigned to one of the two procedures. The goal is to see which approach is safer and more effective in the long run.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) and Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement (SAVR)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a less invasive TAVR procedure is as safe and effective as open-heart surgery for people with bicuspid aortic valves, guiding better treatment choices.

What could go wrong

This is a large trial but has not started recruiting yet. Results may not apply to all patients, and TAVR may carry different risks (like stroke or need for reintervention) compared to surgery.
