Can a common ED drug help COPD patients breathe easier?
NCT ID NCT05844462
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether tadalafil, a drug often used for erectile dysfunction, can help people with severe pulmonary hypertension caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). About 200 adults with both conditions will receive either tadalafil or a placebo daily for 16 weeks. The main goal is to see if the drug improves how far they can walk in six minutes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Tadalafil
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a new treatment option to improve exercise capacity in people with severe pulmonary hypertension due to COPD.
What could go wrong
This is a phase 3 trial, but previous studies of similar drugs in COPD-related PH have shown mixed results. Tadalafil may not improve walking distance and could cause side effects like headache or low blood pressure.
