Could a daily probiotic boost gum health in smokers?
NCT ID NCT07672379
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether adding a daily synbiotic supplement (probiotics plus prebiotic) to standard non-surgical gum treatment improves gum health in smokers with advanced periodontitis. 92 smokers and non-smokers will be split into four groups, receiving either the supplement or a placebo for 90 days. Researchers will measure gum pocket depth, attachment levels, and immune and bacterial markers to see if the supplement provides extra benefit.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- synbiotic supplement (probiotics and prebiotic inulin)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a simple, safe add-on to improve gum treatment outcomes for smokers with periodontitis.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with no phase designation. The supplement may show no added benefit over standard care, and results may not apply to non-smokers or other populations.
