Stitch showdown: which suture heals best after joint replacement?
NCT ID NCT07439575
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two ways of closing the wound after hip or knee replacement surgery: barbed sutures (a newer type) versus conventional sutures. About 90 adults having hip or knee replacement will be randomly assigned to one method. Researchers will track wound healing, complications like infection, and how well patients recover function over 90 days. The goal is to find which closure technique is safest and most effective.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If one method proves better, it could lead to faster healing and fewer wound problems after joint replacement surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study (90 people) comparing two common techniques, so results may not apply to all patients or change practice immediately.
