Can a One-Session therapy help displaced people avoid substance abuse?

NCT ID NCT07672457

First seen Jun 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a single session of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can help internally displaced adults manage stress and prevent substance use. Researchers will enroll 144 people who have been displaced by conflict and have used at least one substance (other than alcohol or tobacco) in the past three months. The trial compares the ACT group to a standard health education session to see if the therapy is feasible, acceptable, and shows early signs of reducing substance use.

What this could lead to

If effective, this brief therapy could offer a scalable way to prevent substance use disorders in displaced populations.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial focused on feasibility and acceptability, not yet on proven outcomes. The single-session format may be too brief to produce lasting change.
