Can your own fat heal chronic wounds? small study aims to find out
NCT ID NCT02375802
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-stage study tests whether a person's own fat stem cells can safely help heal pressure ulcers or diabetic foot ulcers. Twelve adults will have a small amount of fat removed from their body, processed to extract stem cells, and then applied to their wound using a special sealant. Researchers will watch for side effects and wound healing over six weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
a patient's own fat-derived stem cells (adipose-derived stromal cells) mixed with a fibrin sealant
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a new way to help heal chronic wounds like pressure ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small pilot study with only 12 people. It mainly checks safety, not effectiveness, and the treatment may not work or could cause infection or bleeding.
