Can your own belly fat fix your aching knee?

NCT ID NCT07405840

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether stem cells taken from a person's own belly fat can help regenerate knee cartilage and reduce pain from osteoarthritis. Sixty adults with moderate to severe knee arthritis will receive either a stem cell injection or a standard hyaluronic acid shot. Researchers will track pain, stiffness, and function over 12 months to see which treatment works better.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
stromal vascular fraction (SVF) from the patient's own fat tissue
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new way to reduce pain and improve knee function in people with osteoarthritis, potentially delaying or avoiding joint replacement.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center trial with 60 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment is still experimental, and long-term benefits or risks are not yet known.
