New combo pill could slash stroke risk by crushing cholesterol
NCT ID NCT07307989
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether combining a statin with ezetimibe (another cholesterol-lowering drug) works better than a statin alone in people who recently had a stroke. Researchers will enroll 300 adults aged 20 or older who had a stroke or TIA within the past 30 days and have high LDL cholesterol. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups and followed to see if the combo helps more people reach a target LDL level below 70 mg/dL.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- statin plus ezetimibe
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that a simple two-drug combination is more effective than a statin alone at lowering cholesterol after a stroke, potentially reducing the risk of future strokes.
- What could go wrong
- This is a phase 2 trial with 300 participants, so results are still early. The combination may not prove significantly better, and some patients may experience side effects like muscle pain or digestive issues.
