Newborn kidney risk score could save tiny lives
NCT ID NCT07202858
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study will check if a tool called the STARZ score can accurately predict acute kidney injury in newborns admitted to the NICU. Researchers will enroll 140 infants and compare the score's predictions to standard tests. If validated, this simple score could help doctors identify at-risk babies earlier and improve care.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could give doctors a reliable tool to spot kidney problems in newborns earlier, potentially reducing complications and saving lives.
What could go wrong
This is an observational validation study, not a treatment trial. The STARZ score may not prove accurate enough in this specific hospital setting, and results may not apply to all newborns.
