Salt vs. potassium: which wins for your arteries?

NCT ID NCT07649005

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether eating more potassium can protect blood vessels from the damage caused by too much salt. Thirty healthy adults aged 55-75 will follow three different diets for 10 days each, with breaks in between. Researchers will measure blood pressure, artery stiffness, and blood vessel function to see if potassium makes a difference.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

controlled diets varying in sodium and potassium levels

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward dietary guidelines that help older adults protect their blood vessels by balancing sodium and potassium intake.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 30 healthy participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It tests short-term effects, not long-term health outcomes.
