Can friends help stop HIV? new trial uses peer power to promote prevention and treatment
NCT ID NCT07409350
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a social network approach can encourage people who inject drugs to start HIV prevention medication (PrEP) and addiction treatment (MOUD). About 398 participants will be assigned to either the LINKED intervention or a control group. The goal is to see if peer influence and group discussions increase uptake and adherence to these life-saving treatments.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- behavioral intervention (social network approach and group sessions)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a low-cost, community-driven way to increase HIV prevention and addiction treatment in high-risk groups.
- What could go wrong
- This is a behavioral study, not a drug trial, so results depend on social dynamics and may not be easy to replicate elsewhere. It is still recruiting and has not yet started.
