Could fixing sleep before knee surgery cut Long-Term pain?
NCT ID NCT06976138
First seen Aug 07, 2026 ยท Last updated Aug 07, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether improving sleep before total knee replacement surgery can reduce pain after the operation. Adults aged 60 and older with knee osteoarthritis and sleep difficulties will receive either cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia, bright light therapy, or a comparison approach. The goal is to see if better sleep leads to less chronic post-surgical pain.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia and bright light therapy
- What this could lead to
- If improving sleep before surgery reduces chronic pain afterward, it could offer a drug-free way to enhance recovery and quality of life for knee replacement patients.
- What could go wrong
- The trial is relatively small and early, and results may not apply to all patients. Sleep interventions require commitment, and not everyone may benefit equally.
