Could shockwaves and magnets ease lymphedema? new trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT06041958
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether two non-invasive therapies—extracorporeal shock wave therapy and pulse electromagnetic field therapy—can reduce swelling and improve quality of life in people with lymphedema after cancer treatment. Ninety participants will receive one of the therapies or standard rehabilitation twice a week for 12 weeks. The goal is to see if these treatments can safely reduce limb circumference, skin thickness, and tissue hardness.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Extracorporeal shock wave therapy and pulse electromagnetic field therapy (both devices)
What this could lead to
If successful, these therapies could offer a non-drug way to reduce limb swelling and improve daily function for people with lymphedema.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with only 90 participants, and the therapies are not yet proven for lymphedema. Results may not apply to all patients, and benefits could be small or temporary.
