New radiation technique may ease cancer bone pain better than standard therapy

NCT ID NCT06391242

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Aug 12, 2026 · Updated 5 times

Summary

This phase 3 trial tests whether a precise, high-dose radiation technique (SBRT) provides better pain relief than standard radiation for cancer patients with painful bone metastases not in the spine. About 230 adults with solid tumors and moderate to severe pain will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatments. The main goal is to see if SBRT leads to complete pain relief more often than standard care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
radiation therapy (stereotactic body radiotherapy or conventional palliative radiotherapy)
What this could lead to
If SBRT works better, it could offer more effective pain relief for people with cancer that has spread to bones, with fewer side effects on healthy tissue.
What could go wrong
This is a late-stage trial, but SBRT is more complex and may not prove superior to standard treatment. There is a risk of bone fracture or need for repeat treatment.
