First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 2 trial is testing whether sargramostim, a drug already approved to stimulate bone marrow, is safe and effective for people with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease. Over 6 months, 42 participants will receive either the drug or a placebo. The study will monitor side effects and measure changes in cognitive function using standard tests.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Sargramostim (also known as Leukine or GM-CSF)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new treatment that slows cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 42 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The drug is being repurposed, and its effects on Alzheimer's are uncertain.
