Could a simple device make root canals less painful?
NCT ID NCT07642349
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This trial investigates whether using an electronic apex locator to determine the exact stopping point during root canal treatment can reduce pain afterward. Participants with a single-rooted tooth needing a root canal are randomly assigned to one of three groups: two groups use the electronic device to guide treatment, and one group uses standard X-ray methods. Pain levels are measured over the first three days after the procedure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
electronic apex locator (J Morita Root ZX)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that using an electronic apex locator reduces pain after root canal treatment, leading to a more comfortable experience for patients.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with 125 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Pain is subjective and can vary widely between individuals.
