Chill after the drill: could cold saline soothe root canal pain?

NCT ID NCT07663227

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether using a cold saline rinse after ultrasonic cleaning during a root canal can lower pain afterward. Adults with an inflamed tooth nerve will get either ultrasonic cleaning alone or followed by a cold saline flush. Pain levels are tracked for three days after the procedure.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Ultrasonic activated irrigation and intracanal cryotherapy (cold saline)

What this could lead to

If effective, this approach could offer a simple, low-cost way to reduce pain after root canal treatment, improving patient comfort.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The pain reduction may be minimal or not clinically significant.
