New blood thinner trial aims to prevent rebleeding in liver patients

NCT ID NCT07602062

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether the blood thinner rivaroxaban can safely improve outcomes in people with liver cirrhosis who have both a blood clot in the portal vein and a high risk of variceal bleeding. About 175 participants will receive rivaroxaban or standard care starting 48 hours after endoscopic treatment. The goal is to see if it reduces rebleeding, clot worsening, and other serious complications.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Rivaroxaban (a blood thinner)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a safer way to manage blood clots in cirrhosis patients and reduce the risk of rebleeding and other complications.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with only 175 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The main risk is bleeding, which could be serious in these patients.
