Breathing workouts boost lung power in young kidney transplant recipients

NCT ID NCT06655181

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether 8 weeks of respiratory muscle training using a special breathing device could improve lung function and muscle strength in 30 children aged 8-18 who had a kidney transplant at least 6 months earlier. The training involved both inspiratory and expiratory exercises. The goal was to see if this simple, non-drug approach could help counter the respiratory and muscle weakness that often follows kidney transplantation.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Respiratory muscle training device (POWERbreathe)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, drug-free way to improve breathing and physical strength in children after kidney transplant.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed trial with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to all children. The intervention is a device, not a drug, so benefits are likely modest.
