Can opening blocked kidney arteries tame stubborn high blood pressure?

NCT ID NCT02770066

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This registry tracks 160 high-risk patients with resistant hypertension due to narrowed kidney arteries. All patients undergo a procedure called percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty (balloon dilation, often with a stent) to open the blockage. Researchers will measure changes in 24-hour blood pressure over two years to see if the procedure helps control blood pressure better than medications alone.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty (a procedure to open narrowed kidney arteries using a balloon, often with a stent)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that renal angioplasty helps lower blood pressure in patients with resistant hypertension due to kidney artery narrowing, potentially reducing their need for multiple medications.

What could go wrong

This is an observational registry, not a controlled trial, so results may not prove cause and effect. The procedure carries risks like bleeding or artery damage, and benefits may vary widely among patients.
