Reiki may ease pain after knee surgery, new trial tests
NCT ID NCT07442435
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether Reiki, a gentle energy-based touch therapy, can reduce pain and help patients move better after total knee replacement surgery. 90 adults having planned knee surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either Reiki or standard care. Researchers will measure pain, mobility, and vital signs at 24, 48, and 72 hours after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Reiki therapy (a non-invasive energy-based touch therapy)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a drug-free way to ease pain and speed up recovery after knee replacement surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 90 people. Reiki's effects are hard to measure, and any benefit might be due to the placebo effect.
