New study aims to fix skin assessment bias for dark-skinned patients with vein disease

NCT ID NCT06798766

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 38 times

Summary

This study focuses on chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a condition where leg veins struggle to return blood to the heart, causing skin changes and ulcers. Current assessment methods often miss early signs in people with dark skin tones, leading to delayed treatment. Researchers will interview patients about their experiences and test modified skin assessment techniques, including touch and special photography, to improve detection. The goal is to reduce health inequities by creating better guidance for clinicians.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to better clinical guidelines and assessment tools for detecting chronic venous insufficiency in people with dark skin tones, reducing misdiagnosis and health disparities.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage observational study with only 51 participants. It does not test a treatment, so any improvements in care will depend on future research and implementation.
