Brain-Monitored blood pressure may cut delirium in elderly heart patients

NCT ID NCT07671404

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

About one in four older adults experiences confusion (delirium) after cardiac surgery, which can lead to longer hospital stays and higher risks. This pilot study tests whether using a brain-monitoring device to personalize blood pressure during surgery can help prevent delirium. Researchers will enroll 60 patients aged 60 and older undergoing complex heart surgery, comparing standard care to a tailored approach based on real-time brain blood flow data.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Mespere NeuroOs cerebral oximeter monitor

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could reduce delirium after heart surgery by tailoring blood pressure to each patient's brain needs.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study (60 people) testing feasibility, not yet effectiveness. The device may not improve outcomes or could be impractical in routine care.
