New combo therapy aims to shrink rectal tumors before surgery

NCT ID NCT07284992

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 2 trial compares two types of radiotherapy (short-course vs long-course) given alongside immunotherapy (Adebrelimab) and chemotherapy before surgery for locally advanced rectal cancer. The goal is to see which approach leads to a higher rate of complete tumor disappearance. About 208 participants will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Adebrelimab (PD-L1 inhibitor) plus capecitabine and oxaliplatin chemotherapy

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a more effective pre-surgery treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer, potentially increasing the chance of complete tumor disappearance before surgery.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 2 trial with only 208 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The combination of treatments may cause significant side effects, and it is not yet known if it improves long-term survival.
