New study tests simple trick to stop pain after nerve block wears off
NCT ID NCT07666971
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving scheduled morphine doses alongside on-demand pain relief can prevent the severe 'rebound pain' that often occurs when a nerve block wears off after orthopedic surgery. One hundred adults having arm or leg surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either on-demand morphine alone or on-demand plus scheduled slow-release morphine. The main goal is to see which group reports less worst pain in the first 24 hours after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Morphine (oral, immediate-release and slow-release)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a simple way to prevent severe rebound pain after surgery, reducing the need for extra painkillers and improving recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 100 participants. The results may not apply to all surgeries or patients, and adding scheduled morphine could increase side effects like nausea or drowsiness.
