New study tests simple trick to stop pain after nerve block wears off
NCT ID NCT07666971
First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving scheduled morphine doses alongside on-demand pain relief can prevent the severe 'rebound pain' that often occurs when a nerve block wears off after orthopedic surgery. One hundred adults having arm or leg surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either on-demand morphine alone or on-demand plus scheduled slow-release morphine. The main goal is to see which group reports less worst pain in the first 24 hours after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Morphine (oral, immediate-release and slow-release)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a simple way to prevent severe rebound pain after surgery, reducing the need for extra painkillers and improving recovery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 100 participants. The results may not apply to all surgeries or patients, and adding scheduled morphine could increase side effects like nausea or drowsiness.
