Can a steroid injection before root canal silence Post-Procedure pain?
NCT ID NCT07755306
First seen Aug 10, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This trial asks whether injecting dexamethasone, a steroid, before a root canal can reduce pain afterward. Adults with a painful, inflamed tooth will receive the injection either in the cheek or near the tooth, or just standard numbing. Pain levels will be tracked for three days to see if the steroid helps.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- dexamethasone
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to reduce pain after root canal treatment, potentially decreasing the need for painkillers.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial, and results may not apply to all patients. Dexamethasone injections can cause local side effects like pain or swelling, and the benefit over standard care is not yet proven.
