Root canal relief? study tests weaker bleach for less pain

NCT ID NCT07618182

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two strengths of sodium hypochlorite (a disinfectant used during root canals) to see which causes less pain afterward. 116 adults needing a root canal will be randomly assigned to receive either a 2.5% or 5.25% solution. Pain levels will be measured at 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours after treatment using a simple pain scale.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
sodium hypochlorite
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that a lower concentration of sodium hypochlorite reduces pain after root canal treatment while still cleaning the tooth effectively.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 116 participants. The results may not apply to everyone, and the difference in pain between the two concentrations might be small or not meaningful.
