Can a capsaicin patch ease diabetic foot pain? new study investigates

NCT ID NCT06495424

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether repeated use of QUTENZA (a capsaicin 8% patch) can reduce pain and the need for painkillers in adults with painful diabetic nerve damage in the feet. About 144 participants will receive up to three patch applications, each 12 weeks apart. Researchers will track pain scores, quality of life, and medication use to see if the treatment works in real-world settings.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

capsaicin 8% patch (QUTENZA)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide real-world evidence that repeated QUTENZA treatments safely reduce diabetic nerve pain and the need for pain medications.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a controlled trial, so results may be less reliable. It is also small (144 people) and only looks at short-term effects over three treatments.
