New stitch technique may cut complications after mastectomy
NCT ID NCT07512141
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether using quilting stitches (which attach skin to muscle) with just one drain under the arm works as well as using two drains after mastectomy. The goal is to prevent seroma (fluid buildup), infection, and pain. Sixty women having a modified radical mastectomy will be randomly assigned to one of the two groups.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- quilting sutures and surgical drains
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a simpler, less painful recovery after mastectomy by reducing fluid buildup and the need for multiple drains.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The quilting technique may not reduce complications significantly.
